::..:. IRC FAQ/TUTORIALS .:..:: Spare me the tutorial crap. I just want to know: where is the Manga Downloads IRC channel?
Visit us at #Grandline @ irc.irchighway.netUmm.. IR...C...? I'm confused already.
There are plenty of well-written, informative FAQs out there. For MangaDownloads to make another one would serve no purpose. Here you'll find a list of links to great IRC Tutorials and a brief explanation of what IRC is and how to use it.Credit goes completely to Brew for writing/posting these helpful pieces on the forum! What is IRC?

There are basically 2 kinds of manga channels (like chat rooms) for normal people to use on irc.1) Many groups have channels (like chat rooms) on irc through which they "officially" release their manga. You can find these official channels via http://www.manganews.net/ (or if you are french - http://dailymanga.free.fr/index.php ). if you are looking for a specific title, click on their "titles" link, if you are looking for a specific group's channel, click on "scanlators" link. once you locate the channel, it will be in the format - #channelname@networkname to get to the network, typ "/server networkname" in your irc client to get to the channel, type "/join #channelname" in your irc client 2) distribution channels - maybe channels that don't do their own releases, but do share stuff that they downloaded from other channels/websites/fserves. the only channel i know of that does this is #manga@efnet. please let me know if you know of any others. It's about community....
also, i might add... irc is a community (kind of like this forum) where sharing is encouraged, but taking taking taking (and not giving back, and being ungrateful/demanding, and expecting everything to be easy) is discouraged.Don't get me wrong. If you can only afford to take, that's fine.
If you've got DSL or something, fserving is an easy and painless way to give back/contribute to the community. But if you connection's crap or you just can't store manga on your HD, that's okay! Here are some other ways to give back to the community: help irc newbies, share files (fserve/ftp/http/etc.), scan/edit/translate/grammar check/proofread manga, web design, etc. you are only limited by your desire, and creativity (and connection to the internet :p) 56kers...i personally would probably contribute nothing if i were in your shoes (which i once was on a crappy unreliable 56k connex). What is Fserve?
you share files on irc by using a file server.an irc file server is called an fserve. to fserve, you need an irc script that supports fserving. my favorite is upp (but the author recently had a massive hard drive loss lost several months worth of unreleased work :( ) my old favorite was sysreset - it's probably still good. until upp's next release, it is probably the easiest (that i've used). keep upp in mind though for later :p Some Sysreset Tutorials: + http://www.animewired.net/tutorial/tutorial.html + dew drop's Sysreset setup tutorial some other popular scripts are edk script and excursion [ mirror ] (i've never used either of them though) i'm sure you can get more information via google by searching for "sysreset fserve tutorial", "excursion fserve tutorial" or "edk fserve tutorial" try the websites for each script first though (of course) http://www.questie.com/manga/ - has a section on fserving too also worth mentioning, is a neat fserve that allows leechers to download from a web page interface - http://www.undercut.org/WebFServe/ |
